Iran to construct gas station in Zanzibar

AS Zanzibaris passionately wait for the power blackout to end, salvation may come from a different direction when the Iran Government constructs a gas station in Zanzibar for electricity generation, state house press release says. “We have ample gas. Iran is the second largest producer of gas in the world, therefore we can help resolve power crisis in Zanzibar by constructing a gas station, which would produce electricity,” Mr Movahhedi Ghomi, the Iran Ambassador to Tanzania, was quoted as promising president Amani Karume at the state house today. Zanzibar has been without electricity since December 10th last year after some gadgets (splitters) at the Fumba power receiving station in Unguja Island failed. The press release did not give details of the gas project, but said further that the ambassador has also promised to construct honey-producing industry in Zanzibar in efforts to create jobs for youths. “We also have plans to continue supporting education sector and agriculture development in Zanzibar. Since we plan to construct a farm equipment (including tractors) factory in Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar will definitely benefit from the project,” the ambassador told hid guest. Mr Ghomi said that his country was determined to help Zanzibar in various sectors, including trade and investors from Iran to invest in the islands. According to the release, President Amani Karume was thankful to the envoy, saying, “Iran has been a good friend of Zanzibar and always kept promises. We must be proud because the industries will help reduce unemployment.” Karume was quoted as telling the envoy that Zanzibar was struggling to find a ‘permanent’ solution to the electricity crisis, which has affected social life and the economy. “Therefore, having a gas station in Zanzibar is definitely good news to Zanzibaris
